Hi Lisa,
Only the coin cars have the orientations to go around a corner. None of the long farm cash cars can do that. Yes you can have coin cars in you train with the long cars. Only the long cars will carry products.
You can see a train with both types in it and going around a corner on my default farm. Link is below in my signature.

Got it. Just figured I couldn't mix the cars in a train.

Not seeing it on the farm that I go to from that link but I could be blind LOL...I haven't been up long

You're talking about the dispatched train? I see it now. Also, I'm trying to find a place to put that freight car loading tower on one of my farms and I'm not having any luck finding a place it'll fit

Is it normal for the loading tower to not couple with a standard locomotive and its cars?

Hi Lisa

Maybe you should place the Loading tower first and then try to align the decorative cars and the locomotive.
It is a decorative train so you can play with it till you find the right position.

You have crops planted near the train and the loading tower so maybe that is why you cant align it correctly as crops do not allow you to move the tower where you want.

ETA: Removed all of that train and placed the loading tower. Train cars still don't align.

I planted the crops AFTER trying to align the train.
Will deal with this after some good sleep

No matter when you planted the crops, the farm was already plowed.
The loading tower is a large decor, so it will need more space to be placed correctly.

Show everything on that farm to be able to see if something is interfering with the tower.

EDIT TO ADD: are you trying to get the loading tower highlights when hover the mouse on the locomotive? If so, that will not happen.
