How to find and use the Snipping Tool

Note: Mac users you may not have this or you will have something similar called a Grab tool that you can use. Our apologies but we do not have instructions for that tool, all we know is it does work in a similar way.

The Snipping tool is a way to take a snapshot of what you are viewing on your screen. It's like taking a screenshot by pressing "Print Screen" on your keyboard but has more options, one of which is letting you save a much smaller snapshot which is better when you need to post a picture on the forum and you don't need to show the whole farm. - the Snipping tool will eventually be replaced by windows with Snip and Sketch. You may have both tools or only one of them, but the instructions are pretty much the same.

If you want to take a snapshot of your whole farm please make sure you are not in full screen and your browser zoom is set no higher than 100% or the picture will be way too big for the forum.

Instructions: - This may look like a lot of work, but once you have done it a few times you will find it easy to remember when you need it again.

1. In the windows search box bottom left of your screen start typing in Snipping Tool. You should then see this which you need to click on:
2. You will then see a small box appear that looks like this. Note this tool will be changing to a new tool called Snip and Sketch which does the same thing just with more options.
3. Click on Mode and select "Rectangular Snip" Then click on New and the screen will dim.
4. When your screen dims, you will see a big + on your screen instead of your mouse pointer
5. Move the plus to the top left area of the part of the screen you want to take a snip of, then click and hold your left mouse button down and drag the mouse over the screen to the size you want to copy. As you drag the + it shows you the image clearly.

6. When you release the left button the snip will be taken and you will see a preview of what you have taken. If it's not right you can just click on New again and try again.

7. When you are happy with your image click the disc icon to save the snip

You need to save it somewhere where you can find it on your computer to upload it to Facebook. We suggest your Pictures folder, but it's up to you, you just need to be able to find it again.

8. Go to your Facebook Profile, and make a new post you need to click on the Photo/Video link at the top of the post. Your computer files will open, find your picture and click on it to select it, then click on Open at the bottom of the window and it will upload it to Facebook. Then you can add any description you like, change the privacy of the post to Public, and click the Post button to post it to Facebook.
IMPORTANT: Check the privacy of the photo! It must be set to "Public" or we will not be able to see it on the forum. To check the privacy, look near the bottom of the posting box for News Feed, this needs to be set to Public. The image above shows News Feed is set to Public. If it does not say public there, click on it to change it.

9. Once it is posted to Facebook, you then need to click on the photo you would like to post to the forum to view the larger image of it. Then "Right-click" your mouse on the photo and choose:
  • For Google Chrome: "Copy image address"
  • For Firefox: “Copy image location”
  • For Internet Explorer: “Copy”
  • For Opera: “Copy image address”
  • For Safari: “Copy image address”
  • For Edge: "Save Image As"

10. Come back to the forum thread you want to post in.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see the Quick Reply box
  • Then click on the "Insert Image" icon idicated in the picture with a red arrow.at the top of your post, (yellow square with grayish mountains or hills on it).
  • A small box will open.
    • DELETE the "http://" that is shown in there.
    • THEN "Right click" your mouse in the box and select "Paste".

  • Click OK. When you have done that if you need to add information to the post click your mouse after
the end of IMG] then click enter on your keyboard and type your message.

11. If you would like to view how your picture and post will appear before you post it, within your post select the "Go Advanced" or "Preview Post" option included in the bottom of your post.

12. When you are happy with how your post looks, click "Submit Reply" or "Post Quick Reply"

How to use the Camera in your tool box to take a picture and post it in the forum

1. Go to your farm and show EVERYTHING in your game settings that you need us to see. This means you have to put a check mark to the options you want for "Show ... " in your game Preferences (little wrench top right of your game screen) before taking your photo. If you need to show everything select ALL the "Show...." options. Then click the green check mark to save the setting.
  • If you have just finished designing, reload your game in case anything was hidden by accident. Check your farm and makes sure everything is showing correctly especially animals.
  • Click on your yellow tool box, then click on the camera icon.

2. You must do the following items BEFORE you click "Next". The options are indicated with red arrows in the picture below.
  • At the top of the window select "Farm" to show the whole farm OR "Window", to show just a part of the farm.
  • Then choose SMALL size, never Medium or Large as they are too big for the forum.
  • You can also select the Background, Green or White.
  • After that, just click on "Next".

When you click on Next the picture is automatically posted to your Facebook Timeline.

3. Go to your Facebook Profile, Timeline, and look for your photo.

4. IMPORTANT: Check the privacy of the photo! It must be set to "Public" or we will not be able to see it on the forum. To check the privacy, look above the photo, under your name is a date or time. To the right of that date/time is an icon.
It should be a round world, if it looks like an outline of a profile or a padlock, then it is not set to "Public" and you must change it.

To change it click on the icon and then click on "Public".

5. You then need to click on the photo you would like to post to the forum to view the larger image of it.

6. Once you've done that, "Right-click" your mouse on the photo and choose:
  • For Google Chrome: "Copy image address"
  • For Firefox: “Copy image location”
  • For Internet Explorer: “Copy”
  • For Opera: “Copy image address”
  • For Safari: “Copy image address”
  • For Edge: "Save Image As"

8. If you would like to view how your picture and post will appear before you post it, within your post select the "Go Advanced" or "Preview Post" option included in the bottom of your post.

10. When you are happy with how your post looks, click "Submit Reply" or "Post Quick Reply".

SENDING A PICTURE TO SUPPORT - IMPORTANT! You ONLY need to do this IF Support asks you to send one.
They will let you know if one is needed and they will give you the email address to use themselves.

There are 2 methods. In these cases you do not need to save the pictures to your computer. You might want to anyway in case you need them again.

Method 1: - Using the snipping Tool or Snip and Sketch Tool provided by Windows.
Mac Users if you no longer have access to the windows Snipping Tool you may have a Grab Tool instead that you can use which we think works in a similar way. We apologize but we do not have instructions for that tool.

The Snipping tool is a way to take a snapshot of what you are viewing on your screen. It's like taking a screenshot by pressing "Print Screen" on your keyboard but has more options, one of which is letting you save a much smaller snapshot which is better when you need to post a picture in an email or on the forum and you don't need to show the whole farm. - the Snipping tool will eventually be replaced by windows with Snip and Sketch. You may have both tools or only one of them, but the instructions are pretty much the same.

If you want to take a snapshot of your whole farm please make sure you are not in full screen and your browser zoom is set no higher than 100% or the picture will be way too big.

7. When you are happy with your image you can chose whether to save it now or save it later. For the time being we will just tell you how to copy it to paste in into an email.
To copy the picture click on the little Notepads indicated with the red arrow:

You then write your email as normal and then "Right click" your mouse and select "Paste" from the menu and your picture will be pasted into the email.

If you want to save the snip click the disc icon

You need to save it somewhere where you can find it on your computer to upload it to emails or Facebook. We suggest your Pictures folder, but it's up to you, you just need to be able to find it again.

Method 2: Screenshots - If you can't get the hang of how to use the snipping tool you can send a screenshot in your email instead. Again if possible try to keep the browser zoom no larger than 100% or it will be too big. We don't like these for the forum as they are far too big, but if you are desperate and need one for Help and Support reasons ONLY go ahead and use it, we will delete the picture when we have seen what we need to.

1. Open your farm and show in your game preferences whatever it is you need support to see.

2. Click "Print Screen" on your Keyboard. On some keyboards it is shortened to PRT SC It's usually located near the top of your keyboard over on the right.

3. You then write your email as normal and then "Right click" your mouse and select "Paste" from the menu and your picture will be pasted into the email.

Default How to take a picture or a Snip and post it in a forum post - Windows 11.

How to find and use the Snipping Tool/Snip & Sketch Tool - Windows 11

In Windows 11 there is no longer a search box bottom left of your monitor screen and your windows icons are centered in the Task Bar at the bottom of your monitors screen.

How to Open the Snipping Tool:
There are several ways to open the Snipping Tool.
If you've previously used the Snipping Tool in Windows 10 or earlier and are already familiar with how to use the tool and save the picture you can use any of the methods shown below to open the Snipping tool and save the picture, then skip down to the instructions on How to Post the Picture to Facebook or How to post a Picture in the Forum.

If you have never used the Snipping Tool you may find it easier to use Method C to open the Snipping Tool until you get used to it.

Detailed instructions on How to use the Snipping tool are listed under Method C followed by How Save your Snip (Picture), How to Post your picture to Facebook, then how to upload your picture to the Forum should you need to do that.

Method A:
If you prefer Keyboard Shortcuts press the Windows+Shift+S keys.
OR if you have PRINT SCREEN or PRT SRN button on your keyboard you can click on that.

When you use this method your screen will dim and you will see a mini window at the top of your monitor and a white Plus sign that lets you click and drag the mouse over the area you want to copy. This is an example of the mini window and plus sign showing over the background colour of the game screen:

The background colour of the left icon in the picture can differ depending on your windows settings.

Method B: Snipping Tool in your Task Bar.
If you like to use this tool frequently, some of you may already have the Snipping Tool pinned to your Task Bar at the bottom of your monitor.
To check if it's already there, look in the Task Bar at the bottom of your monitor for this icon.
If you can see that icon click on it.

You will then see this menu. The background colour of the window you see may be white:

We suggest if you are new to using the snipping tool that you make sure the top 2 sections are set like the picture, Rectangle Mode and No Delay.
You can change them to something else if you wish.

Click on New then the mini menu widow will show and the White Plus sign will appear allowing you to click and drag over the area you want to copy:

The background colour of the left icon in the picture can differ depending on your windows settings.

Method C - How to find the Snipping Tool and Use it:

If you can not see the Snipping Tool icon in the Task Bar at the bottom of your monitor you can either click on the Windows Search icon or the Windows icon instead.
Example of what you could see in the Task Bar at the bottom of your monitor. Your icons may be in a different order to this example!

Clicking on the Windows icon or the Windows Search Icon will show a new window with a search box at the very top where you can start to type in Snipping Tool.
You should then see the Snipping Tool appear that you need to to click on, doesn't matter which one:
You will then see this:

We suggest if you are new to using the snipping tool that you make sure the top 2 sections are set like the picture, Rectangle Mode and No Delay.
You can change them to something else if you wish.

Click on New then the mini menu window will show and the White Plus sign will appear allowing you to click and drag over the area you want to copy:

The background colour of the left icon in the picture can differ depending on your windows settings.

How to use the Snipping Tool once it is open: Whichever method above you prefer to use, when you have opened the Snipping Tool and the mini window is open with the White Plus sign showing your screen will dim..
As you move your mouse that White Plus sign will move with it. Move it to one of the top corners of the area you want to copy then hold the left mouse button down and drag it down to the opposite corner of the area you are copying. (Perhaps start at the top left corner then, hold the left button down and drag down to bottom right) As you do that the area you are copying will no longer be dimmed out.

In this Example I have moved the mouse to where the the top left arrow is showing.
Then held the left mouse button down and dragged it to where the bottom right arrow is showing.
It doesn't matter which corner you start at as long as you hold the left button down while you drag the mouse diagonally over to the other corner.

When you release the left button the snip will be taken and you will see a preview of what you have taken. If it's not right you can just click on New and try again.

How to Save your Snip (Picture):
When you are happy with your image click the disc icon to save the snip.
The save icon is indicated in the picture below with an arrow:

You need to save it somewhere where you can find it on your computer to upload it to Facebook.
We suggest your Pictures folder, but it's up to you!
You need remember where it is and what you named it to be able to find it again.
Making a note of where you saved it and what you named it can help!
To post the picture to your Facebook profile:
  1. Go to your Facebook Profile, and make a new post. Click on the Photo/Video link in the post:

  2. The posting box will change and look like this:

  3. Click on the Add Photos/Videos text in the window.
You could see your picture immediately, if you do you can just click on it to upload it.

If you do not, you need to click on Show All Files and find the picture where you saved it on your computer.

  4. When you find where the picture is on your computer, click on the picture to select it, then click Open at the bottom of that window.

Your picture will load and you can add any description you like to your Facebook post.

IMPORTANT: If you are using the picture for the forum:

We do not need to see a picture of the entire monitor screen, it will be far too big for the forum.

If you need to show the whole farm in your picture, make sure that your browser zoom is set to 100%, no higher, and that you are in regular screen not full screen. The size of the game screen in regular mode is about as wide as the picture can be for the forum so that it's not to wide.

If what you need to show us is small, just zoom in on the farm so you can see it clearer. You only need to take a snip the size of the area you need us to see.

If you need to show us any text in a picture and the text is small make sure when you take your snip that the text is readable.

The Privacy of the photo must be set to Public or we will not be able to see it on the forum.

The image below shows the Facebook Post Privacy is set to Public. If it does not say Public, click on it to change it.

To Post the Picture in the Forum:
  1. When your picture is posted to Facebook
  2. Right-click your mouse on the photo and you should see one of these options, they differ depending on the browser you are using, chose one that includes the words image over one that just says copy if you see both options:
    • Copy image address
    • Copy image location
    • Copy image link
    • Copy
NOTE: If you do not see those options, click on the picture to see the bigger image of it, then right click your mouse on the picture to see those options.

  3. When you have copied the link go to the forum thread you want to post in.

  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see the Quick Reply box

  5. Click on the "Insert Image" icon indicated in the picture with a red arrow:

  6. A small box will open. Your box may have a white background.

  7. DELETE the "http://" that is shown in there.

  8. THEN Right click your mouse in that same area of the box and select Paste. You should a lot of text and numbers added to the box similar to this:

  9. Click OK at the bottom of that box.

The picture below shows you what an image link can look like before you post it.
The red arrow indicates where the end of the image link is.
If you need to add any message or description along with your picture have a look at where your mouse cursor is in the message box, so that you can be sure that you are not typing the message in middle of the link which will make the image link fail to work.

If you click you mouse at the very end of the image link after IMG]
Then click Enter/Return on your keyboard so that your mouse cursor appears underneath the picture link.
You can then type your message below the link.

In this picture the description we have added (Rainbow on Farm Town) is indicated with the arrow and is below the image link:

  10. If you would like to view how your picture and post will appear before you post it, at the bottom of the posting box you will see Go Advanced or Preview Post which you can click on to preview your post.

  11. When you are happy with how your post looks, click on Submit Reply or Post Quick Reply and you should see your picture and any description appear with your forum name similar to this:
