Farm Town legion has it that Jack the pumpkin farmer who farmed on the outskirts of town had one small patch of pumpkins yet to sell at the town market. The temperatures fell suddenly and he feared they would freeze. In desperation he made lanterns out of some, carving holes in them to help heat escape and set them about to warm the patch. His young son pointed to a pumpkin that he carved and said "Papa look that one looks like it has a face" and from then on he carved faces. The lighted pumpkins become popular with the towns people in the fall and the holiday of Halloween and from then on were called ... Jack~O~Lanterns.
